Devlog 2: Prototype & Planning

Welcome back to the Devlog for BoNana Bounce!

We are in our 3rd week of the project. The first week was all about brainstorming and the second week was about researching prototypes. This week, we created our prototype build! Next to this we also finished our art bible, techdoc and game design document. Those last two documents are mostly technical, so we wont go over them. In this devlog, we’ll first go over the prototype build (which you can find at the end of this blog!) and then we’ll show some pages out of the art bible.

Prototype

Getting a working prototype proved to be difficult. Implementing the camera was the biggest issue during the build. When the 2 players are close to each other, the camera is not a problem. But when they are far away from each other, how do we show them both without zooming out way too far? We tried implementing split screen, but so far no luck. So right now, we are still working with a camera that zooms out to show both players. All the core mechanics are implemented. The player can throw, slap, dash and bounce around.

While the coders were working on the prototype, the artists made some levels to see what works best. Right now levels might be too short, so this is something we still have to look at.

Art Bible

Last week we already talked about art style and colour palette. It’s things like this that get recorded in an art bible. An art bible is a style guide that determines how the game will look. This is necessary to keep the art style consistent between team members, but is also useful for new team members when they join the team. This way they can learn the art style quickly and start creating assets.

Below are two pages out of our art bible. First, the moodboard, which shows what kind of feel we want for the game. Second, a page with art style examples. If you read the first devlog you’ll already know that we are aiming for a younger audience with a kid friendly art style. With these pages, you can actually see some examples of other games, to see what we mean:

That’s all for this week, see you next time!
